The complete story of Ukeme Johnny Nsekpong — from street hawking to founding multiple companies, from depression to purpose-driven entrepreneurship

Ukeme Johnny Nsekpong (born June 15, 1996), professionally known as Johnnywriter, is a Nigerian writer, relationship therapist, entrepreneur, and technology founder. He is the founder and CEO of Hisparadise Group, a diverse conglomerate he founded in 2018 with subsidiaries spanning wellness, cleaning, digital solutions, real estate, education, culinary experiences, fashion, and beauty. As founder, he has built multiple successful companies including Hisparadise Therapy, Jocintek Technology Limited, and Hisparadise Media. His work exists at the intersection of empathy, healing, and human dignity, with a focus on helping individuals and organizations achieve clarity, emotional wellness, and sustainable growth.

Born in Etinan Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, Johnnywriter is the first child and only son in a family of four children. His life story is one of transformation—from contemplating suicide during a severe depression episode to dedicating his life to helping others find healing, purpose, and meaning. His experiences with street hawking, financial struggle, health crises, and emotional pain have shaped his empathetic approach to therapy, writing, and entrepreneurship.

Early Life and Education

Childhood and Family Background

Raised by his resilient mother alongside three sisters, Johnnywriter's upbringing in a home without the presence of a loving marital relationship deeply shaped his emotional intelligence, empathy, and passion for helping others navigate relationship challenges. His mother's strength and determination instilled in him values of perseverance and compassion that would later define his professional work.

His difficult childhood experience—marked by personal struggles, emotional voids, and an early awareness of human pain—became the soil in which his purpose was planted. These challenges would later fuel his passion for helping others heal from similar wounds and transform their pain into purpose. From a young age, he showed a strong inclination toward observation and reflection, less interested in surface success and more drawn to understanding why people behave the way they do, how pain shapes character, and how dignity can survive even in hardship.

Academic Background

Johnnywriter began his formal education in Etinan, where he attended primary and secondary school. He went on to study Banking and Finance at Madonna University, Okija, graduating in the 2016/2017 academic session. This education provided him with valuable business and financial knowledge that would later support his entrepreneurial ventures. Although his academic training was in finance, his inner calling leaned elsewhere—toward human behavior, emotions, social realities, and writing.

In 2018, he completed his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) program at the Agricultural Development Programme (ADP) in Ibusa, Delta State, gaining practical experience and developing leadership skills through community service. Since 2019, he has pursued numerous professional certifications in therapy, mental health, technology, and business, continuously expanding his knowledge and skills to better serve his clients and grow his ventures.

Early Literary Achievement

At just 20 years old, Johnnywriter wrote his first memoir, The Street Hawker, a raw and honest account inspired by lived and observed realities. That book would later become a foundational pillar of his philosophy: that dignity must never be measured by appearance, status, or circumstance. This early work demonstrated his gift for storytelling and his commitment to giving voice to marginalized experiences.

The Street Hawking Experiment

One of the most defining moments in Johnnywriter's life came through a personal experiment in empathy. Determined to understand the realities of street vendors and hawkers, he deliberately placed himself in their position—selling products on the street late at night.

What he encountered permanently altered his worldview. He experienced verbal abuse, ridicule, humiliation, and suspicion, even from people younger than him. On one occasion, while attempting to sell garnished gizzards near Asaba Shopping Mall (Shoprite), Okpanam Road, he was met with deeply insulting remarks that questioned his morality and humanity.

"That night, walking home with tears in his eyes, Johnnywriter realized something profound: If this is how I am treated—well dressed, educated, articulate—what then becomes of the actual street hawkers who live this reality every day?"

His pain was not for himself, but for the countless hawkers exposed daily to emotional abuse, physical exhaustion, sexual exploitation, accidents and death, drug abuse, and social rejection. He later reflected on another incident involving an elderly woman selling sachet water who was denied payment after serving a customer. Watching her run helplessly after a moving bus ignited a deep anger within him—not out of pride, but out of moral outrage.

"Street hawkers are not beggars. They are service providers. They deserve respect."

The 2018 Crisis: Depression and Survival

Before the breakthrough came the breakdown. While watching television, a commercial about depression appeared on the screen. As each symptom was described, Johnnywriter realized with chilling clarity that he was severely depressed—and had been for a long time without recognizing it.

In February 2018, he was deployed to Asaba, Delta State for his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). Living in a lodge in a city where he knew no one, he became an entrepreneur out of necessity, traveling to Onitsha market to buy goods and sell them in Asaba.

"At night, I sold fried chicken and fried plantain on the streets. During the day, I sold bedsheets, clothes, and anything else I could move. Every naira mattered. Every sale was a small victory."

After his service year ended, things became significantly harder. The small NYSC allowance was gone. Sales slowed down. Bills piled up. He had no family support. No friends to lean on. Just him, alone in Asaba, trying to survive.

Just when he thought things couldn't get worse, his body started failing him. First came the appendix—excruciating pain and surgery he couldn't afford. Then, while still recovering, a hernia developed. Another surgery. More medical bills. More time unable to work.

"My body was breaking down, my finances were non-existent, and my mind was drowning in darkness."

The Suicide Note

In that special kind of darkness that comes when you feel utterly alone, broken, and hopeless, Johnnywriter began to contemplate suicide—not as a passing thought, but as a serious plan. He researched methods. He thought through the details. Then he did something that still haunts him: he wrote a suicide note.

But something stopped him. He felt compelled to go to church one more time. He took his suicide note—this letter that contained all his pain and his plans to end his life—and placed it on the church altar. It was his last desperate cry to God.

The Turning Point

What happened next saved his life. Rev. Ovie Ekpewu, a leader in the church, approached him. He looked at him—really looked at him—and said something unforgettable:

"Johnny, you're depreciating."

Those three words hit like a lightning bolt. Depreciating. Not appreciating. Not growing. Losing value. Diminishing. Fading away. Rev. Ovie saw what had been hidden—while people publicly praised him, he was battling demons privately. He was dying inside while smiling outside.

That statement became his wake-up call. Someone saw him. Someone noticed. Someone cared enough to speak truth into his darkness. That was the moment everything began to change.

Around the same time, another angel appeared—Mr. Sigismund Iweanya. He believed in Johnnywriter when he couldn't believe in himself. He helped with product packaging for his business. It wasn't just financial support; it was someone investing in his potential, seeing something in him worth nurturing.

These two men—Rev. Ovie and Mr. Iweanya—showed him something profound: Sometimes survival depends on people who see our worth when we've forgotten our own.

Writing Career and Published Works

Johnnywriter's writing is known for being deeply reflective, emotionally intelligent, and unfiltered by hypocrisy. Rather than offering quick motivation or shallow inspiration, his works demand honesty, self-examination, and emotional courage.

Notable Published Books

Johnnywriter has authored over 15 published books spanning relationships, mental health, personal development, and social commentary. His most notable works include:

Writing Philosophy

Across all his writings, a consistent philosophy emerges: healing begins with truth, reflection, and responsibility. Johnnywriter rejects performative inspiration in favor of deep, uncomfortable honesty. His books challenge readers to confront themselves, examine their patterns, and take ownership of their growth.

He writes for people who are tired of surface-level advice and are ready to do the hard work of genuine transformation. His tone is compassionate but unflinching, supportive but unwilling to enable self-deception. Explore his books to begin your journey.

Social Advocacy and Commentary

Johnnywriter has consistently spoken against the maltreatment of street hawkers, particularly child hawking, which he identifies as a symptom of systemic poverty, unemployment, and societal neglect. His advocacy work is rooted in his personal experiences and his commitment to human dignity.

"Poverty is driving a rise in the number of Nigerian child hawkers, and if the government cannot help, we should help one another."

His writings and public statements challenge readers to confront uncomfortable questions:

  • Why do we disrespect hawkers who provide services to us?
  • Why do we insult survivors who are simply trying to make an honest living?
  • Why do we dehumanize those who serve us in moments of convenience?
  • What if life places us in their position tomorrow?

To Johnnywriter, empathy is not optional—it is a moral responsibility. He believes that how a society treats its most vulnerable members reveals its true character, and that every person, regardless of their economic status, deserves to be treated with dignity and respect.

Philosophy and Legacy

Johnnywriter's life's work sits at the intersection of storytelling, healing, justice, and enterprise. Across writing, therapy, coaching, speaking, and digital work, his central focus remains the same: clarity, meaning, and growth.

Core Beliefs

He believes that:

  • No condition is permanent — Today's struggles are tomorrow's strength, and circumstances do not define destiny
  • Today's hawker could be tomorrow's leader — Circumstances don't define potential, and everyone deserves respect regardless of their current position
  • Empathy is power — Understanding others transforms everything, from relationships to business to social change
  • Dignity should never be negotiated — Every person deserves respect, regardless of appearance, status, or circumstance
  • Healing begins with truth — Genuine transformation requires honest self-examination and personal responsibility
  • Stories shape reality — The narratives we tell ourselves and others determine our experiences and possibilities

"Someone is praying for what you have today. Use it well."

Approach to Work

His approach is characterized by honesty without harshness, insight without judgment, and a deep respect for the complexity of human experience. He believes that real transformation happens not through force or pretense, but through clarity, courage, and consistent inner work.

Whether writing a book, conducting a therapy session, building a website, or crafting a brand story, Johnnywriter brings the same core values: authenticity, empathy, excellence, and a commitment to serving human dignity.
